A non-profit independent organization for journalists, Journalists Sanctuary International (JSI) has presented protective equipment to Ghana’s leading newspaper, the Graphic Communications Group Limited to help protect its frontline reporters from suffering injuries when they are attacked in line of duty.
The NGO, which was founded in January 2022 by multiple award-winning journalist, Latif Iddrisu of JoyNews, promises to give real meaning to the cliché, ‘protection of journalists’ in Ghana and around the world.
Journalists Sanctuary International has been set up to uphold press freedom and the safety of journalists who at great personal cost, go to perilous places less travelled to report on issues that are given less, or ‘armchair’ news coverage because of the risks involved.
The organization does this by supplying journalists with protective equipment (Military standard helmets and bulletproof vests, pepperspray).
Additionally, expertly designed training on security and safety, and the significance of environmental awareness are offered to journalists.
Presenting the protective gear to the team at the headquarters of the most read newspaper in Ghana, Professor Audrey Gadzekpo who is a member of the Board of Directors at JSI said:
“Latif is on course to turn the unfortunate injury he suffered following the attack by some officers of the Ghana Police Service into something positive”.
The former dean of the School of Communications at the University of Ghana Legon added, that
“With this organization, Latif plans to go beyond advocacy for journalists by giving practical meaning to journalists in newsrooms across Ghana, with a long-term plan of reaching out to newsrooms all over the world”.
News Editor at Graphic Communications Group Limited Samuel Doe Aboddepey who received the items on behalf of the company was full of gratitude to JSI for the donation and said,
“We will efficiently put these PPE’s to use to ensure the safety of our journalists who go out to cover news stories for us”.
Four pieces of military standard helmets and bulletproof vests were donated to the team at Graphic Communications Group Limited, with a plan to supply more to the company and many others in the coming months.
