A non-profit independent organization for journalists, Journalists Sanctuary International (JSI) has presented protective equipment to the management and staff of Adom FM and Adom TV at Kokomlemle in Accra to help protect the outlet’s frontline reporters from suffering injuries when they are attacked in line of duty.
The NGO, which was founded in January 2022 by multiple award-winning journalist, Latif Iddrisu of JoyNews, promises to give real meaning to the cliché, ‘protection of journalists’ in Ghana and around the world.
Journalists Sanctuary International has been set up to uphold press freedom and the safety of journalists who at great personal cost, go to perilous places less travelled to report on issues that are given less, or ‘armchair’ news coverage because of the risks involved.
The organization does this by supplying journalists with protective equipment (Military standard helmets and bulletproof vests, pepperspray).
Additionally, expertly designed training on security and safety, and the significance of environmental awareness are offered to journalists.
Presenting the protective gear to the leadership at Adom news, Professor Audrey Gadzekpo who is a member of the Board of Directors at JSI said:
“Latif is on course to turn the unfortunate injury he suffered following the attack by some officers of the Ghana Police Service into something positive”.
The former dean of the School of Communications at the University of Ghana Legon added, that
“With this organization, Latif plans to go beyond advocacy for journalists by giving practical meaning to journalists in newsrooms across Ghana, with a long-term plan of reaching out to newsrooms all over the world”.
Receiving the items on behalf of the company, Editor Martha Crentsil Aquah who was full of gratitude to JSI for the donation commended Journalists Sanctuary International for the “long overdue but practical step taken by JSI to contribute to the protection and safety of journalists”.
She promised to put these PPE’s to use to ensure the safety of reporters who go out to cover news stories.
Four pieces of military standard helmets and bulletproof vests were donated to the team at Adom TV and Adom FM. A lot more of the gears will be donated to the media outlet and many others in the coming months.
