A not-for-profit organization, Journalists Sanctuary International has for the first time in the history of the West African sub-region, donated dozens of protective gear to media organizations and freelance reporters in Ghana.
The donation (helmet and bulletproof vests) came in handy as reporters who covered a highly anticipated demonstration in Ghana dabbed ‘Ku Me Preko Reloaded’ to wit, ‘just kill me Reloaded’ demonstration, were seen properly suited on the frontline.
Journalists on the day stepped out well strapped in their protective helmets and bulletproof vests; a necessary layer of protection that until now, Journalists in Ghana and many African countries could only admire on TV when they see International broadcasters appear on their channels buckled in those gears.
But thanks to the donation by Journalists Sanctuary International, for the first time in the West African sub-region, reporters covering a civil demonstration were protected on the head by military standard helmets, and in the torso by bulletproof vests and body armor.
The idea is to move beyond media advocacy for freedom of the press by giving journalists the critical tools they need to guarantee their safety whiles on the field.
The organization founded by Latif Iddrisu, a reporter who has on multiple occasions been adjudged best journalist in Ghana, has the objective to among other things, give real meaning to safety of frontline journalists in all over the world.
Latif Iddrisu, a victim of Police brutality says, he has embarked on this course to prevent journalists from suffering injuries in the line of duty like he experienced in 2018 when he suffered a fractured skull following a brutal assault by Police Personnel at Ghana’s Criminal Investigative Department headquarters.
So far, about ten Media outlets in Ghana including print, online, Television, and radio stations have received the riot gear.
A lot more media organizations and freelance Journalists in Ghana and other African countries are expected to benefit from JSI’s project when the NGO gets the necessary support from funding organizations.
Until then Latif Iddrisu funds the organization’s projects with support from members of the board of trustees.
